'All of this nostalgia McCartney conveys with a knowing compassion and subtlety, and a fluency and ease at tempi a scarce number of lutenists can manage gracefully, yet artfully knowing when to relax and reflect. Few contemporary lute players exhibit such a broad range of technique, musicianship, and sheer beauty in their playing as Alex McCartney, or his penchant for exploring seldom-trod reaches or unusual aspects of the repertoire.
